On 23 September 2009, the book ‘Stad van de Zon’ was published. On this day, Prince Willem-Alexander was presented with the first copy. The presentation took place during the official opening of Stad van de Zon, the biggest carbon neutral district in the world, in Heerhugowaard, the Netherlands. The book contains twenty stories told by people involved in this project and by some of the new residents who live there. They reflect on their experiences and share their passion and their insights.

The construction of Stad van de Zon provided Heerhugowaard with an additional 1,600 homes. The homes in this district are energy efficient and the majority have solar panels. Three wind turbines ensure that the district is carbon neutral. An extensive 70 hectare lake offers a natural environment and recreation area, while a flow labyrinth provides natural water purification. Stad van de Zon is now an icon and a shining example for sustainability at home and abroad.

The book ‘Stad van de Zon’ contains twenty interviews with those involved in the project and residents. These stories are illustrated by beautiful photos showing the diverse and interesting ways in which solar energy has been used. ‘Stad van de Zon’ is an inspiring book for anyone wishing to experience a sustainable future in which solar energy, as experienced by the residents on a daily basis, is perfectly natural.
